We made it! And we've finally just about recovered from the epic journey - door-to-door, Totteridge, London, to Monserrat, Buenos Aires, was about 34 hours. Several sleeps and oddly-timed meals later, we're just preparing to leave the lovely Hostel Arrabal, where we spent our first two nights.
So far BA is proving to be a city of constant high contrast. Huge, shiny sky scrapers rub shoulders with crumbling wild-west-style buildings, painted in peeling ice cream colours or not at all, and suited and booted businessmen crowd around plastic tables to eat deliciosos barbecue food at lunchtime. Yesterday we spent the day wandering and orientating ourselves, a highlight being the Reserva Ecologica on the edge of the city. Normally it's marshy and full of wildlife, but as it is only early spring it was all dry and rustley. No animals to be seen, but plenty of little birds of all kinds and new exciting trees. We also touched the south Atlantic! And watched a military ship topped with lines of soldiers come into port.
Last night, although very sleepy, we met some great people at a Couchsurfing meet at a brewery pub up in Recoleta. It was a fun night with a real mix of people, and now we're looking forward to meeting our first hosts of Argentina, a couple called Noelia and Fran who are putting us up for the next three nights! Their place is just south of the city, in the province, so it will be interesting to get a taste of suburban BA!
