From Colombia to Panama via the Carabbean San Blas Islands
Ever heard of the infamous Darien Gap? Well we had, and we were damn sure we would avoid it. This is an area of the Darien forest national park on the Colombia-Panama border that is effectively a no-man's land - it is still controlled by the paramilitary and the FARC guerillas making land travel between south and central america impossible, or at the very least...extremely foolhardy.
Luckily there is an option to bypass this zone, and a great bypass at that! We did that aboard our boat the Darien Gapster, from the Caribbean port of Cartagena and the the metropolitan Panama City via the desert island paradise of the San Blas Island Archipelago of Panama, also known as Kuna Yala. It was a really great trip stopping at loads of beautiful islands and we would recommend the Darien Gapster to anybody trying to make the journey!
