Into the rabbit hole

It's Sunday night, our last night in the UK for quite some time, and our first blog. The bags are packed (some of them, not naming any names, only having been packed this afternoon), the cash has been saved and we are just sorting out the last couple of bits, including loading up our poor tiny laptop with films, before bed.

It's three-and-a-half months since we got the flights and it feels like we have been planning this forever, although of course without actually doing any planning. Monday we fly to Buenos Aires via Madrid, and past the first two nights we have booked into a hostel there, nothing is set in stone yet. It will probably involve heading south, Patagonia way, first, and picking up a few weeks' Spanish tuition is top of our priorities. Perhaps not the most obviously relaxing way to kick things off, but we are well aware that a bit of work at the language now will pay off in so many ways over the next seven months! Also I'm definitely looking forward to getting my geek on. Como estas?!

One early destination that may make the final cut is Valdés Peninsula a way south of Buenos Aires, an area where orca pods are not an uncommon site. Some of them have learnt to beach themselves to grab a tasty seal pup snack to go ... a risky business to be sure, but an awe-inspiring display of nature's wilder side and one that could well be worth the effort to see.

Time to get some sleep in, we've got one hell of a big day tomorrow. Thank you so much to all of our friends and family for being so supportive of our adventure, and for giving us some amazing send-offs over the past few weeks. There have been some difficult decisions to make in doing this - quitting our jobs and leaving everybody we love behind spring to mind - but we couldn't be more excited about what happens next. Into the rabbit hole ...

  1. I'd like to confirm that after a brunch of scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and buck's fizz (our traditional Christmas breakfast) Sarah and Chris were safely deposited at Gatwick airport this afternoon.

    The adventure has begun!
